We are based in Hampton Roads, VA. Our meetings are primarily conducted at the Franklin, VA Airport Terminal building on the second Saturday of each month. Our Lockheed Lodestar is currently based at the Hampton Roads Airport (PVG) in Chesapeake, VA while the Stinson OY-1 is based at the Franklin Airport, visitors are always encouraged to attend our meetings.
We currently have in restoration a Lockheed C-60 Lodestar, which suffered a landing incident in August of 2005, was built in 1942 and used by the U.S. Army Air Force as a transport. Our Stinson OY-1/L-5 “Sentinel”, an observation and utility aircraft built in 1944, is undergoing a complete restoration and should return to the air in the early part of 2008. We normally have working parties going on several times a month to complete work on our various aircraft. If you are interested in helping us work on these aircraft, check out the website for the individual aircraft to view our work schedule. The squadron’s Martin dorsal .50 caliber machine gun turret, as installed on several types of WW II aircraft, is fully operational and is a big hit with the public at air shows and at Squadron events.
The Old Dominion Squadron participates in static and flying air shows in the eastern US, particularly in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. If you are interested in having any of our aircraft, Our PX or one of our members aircraft at your next show, contact our operations officer, Col. Craig Duck.
We are currently organizing a major fundraising campaign to develop a Regional Flying Museum Complex in the Hampton Roads area.
The Old Dominion Squadron conducts several guest speaker dinners and informal social events throughout the year. In the past, we were privileged to have COL Robert Morgan, USAF(Ret.), commander of the B-17 “Memphis Belle,” speak to us at a dinner at the Langley Air Force Base Officers Club. We were also privileged to have CAPT T. Hugh Winters, USN(Ret.), and an F6F Hellcat pilot in the Pacific Theater of World War II as guest speaker at the Naval Air Station Oceana Officers Club.
We also publish a monthly-illustrated newsletter, “The Taildragger,” with squadron activities, our schedule of meetings and air shows, and articles on air shows, other flying museums, and World War II aviation history. |
